Do I need a serial number to test the software?

The software installs in Demo mode. This is a fully functional version of the software. You can read Trax counters, validate and view the data, and store the data to the memory of the PDA. You can’t transfer the data you read to TraxPro, however. To do that you need a serial number. Contact Jamar to get serial numbers.

How does TraxPDA validate the data?

This is probably the most useful part of the software. The idea is to tell you whether the data you retrieved from the traffic counter is good data, before you pull up the road tubes and leave the site. The software runs a series of tests on the data and tells you if it finds any problems. Normally, the tests will pass and the software will simply say that the data is good. Occasionally, however, one or more of the tests will fail and the software will show you exactly what it found, and let you decide if you need to do something.

The tests depend on the type of data you collect. If you simply collect one or two channels of volume data, the software will look for sudden changes in volumes that might indicate a hose went bad. Speed and Axle Class studies have additional tests. If you collect Basic (Raw) Data, then there are tests specifically for that type of data.

These tests are done automatically, and unless a test fails, you don’t need to interact with the software at all. We want to make the software as easy to use as possible.

How is the data transferred to TraxPro?

The traffic data you read and verify is stored in special database files on your PDA. You can read as many counters and studies as your PDA memory allows (normally a lot). Bring the PDA back to the office, put the PDA in the cradle and make sure Active Sync software is running. Then you run the PDA2TraxPro software on your PC to copy the data from the PDA and convert the database files into standard TraxPro data files. Eventually the PDA2TraxPro software will be added to TraxPro, but for now it is a separate utility program.

How is GPS used with TraxPDA?

One feature of TraxPDA is the option to use a standard GPS receiver that connects to your PDA to download the latitude and longitude at the site when you read a Trax counter. This latitude and longitude information is stored with the data and passed on to TraxPro when you transfer the data to your office PC. You can use this information to positively identify the site location for a study. If you use the JMap software (www.jmapinfo.com) from Jamar then the location of the site will automatically show up on your map when you add the study to the JMap database.
